Travelling by motorhome is the best way to explore New Zealand and Australia. No other mode of travel gives you the freedom and flexibility of a motorhome, and it is a great way to reconnect with friends, family members, and nature.
Many years ago the only way to experience motorhome travel was to purchase one yourself, but now a number of motorhome hire companies have lots in Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and beyond. If you are thinking about renting a motorhome to travel across New Zealand, there are a few things you should know.
The Motorhome Supplier May Pick You Up from the Airport
A number of motorhome suppliers are located a short distance away from major New Zealand airports and will more than gladly pick you up and bring you to your motorhome. This eliminates the need to rent a vehicle or try to make other travel arrangements to arrive at the lot.
When It Comes to Motorhomes, Size Matters
As a general rule of thumb, if you are not sure what size motorhome to hire, always choose the larger size. The motorhome hire company will be able to help you best determine what you need based on:
- How many people will be sleeping in the motorhome?
- How important privacy is for those in the motorhome?
- Whether or not the driver(s) will feel comfortable manoeuvring a larger motorhome
- How much space and freedom of movement matters to the driver and other occupants?
Your Motorhome May Not Come with Everything You Need
Make sure that you understand exactly what will be and what will not be included with your motorhome. Having enough beds, a kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower are important, but you want to make sure that you have all of the materials you need to make your trip comfortable available as well.
The more reputable companies for motorhome hire in New Zealandwill include all of the equipment you need to get started, such as:
- Duvets, linens, towels and pillows
- Cutlery, dinnerware and food preparation equipment
- AA Roadside Breakdown Assistance
The company will likely have additional items available for free or for a nominal fee, such as GPS satellite navigation, bike racks, child and infant seats, and snow chains.
You Can Save By Travelling May through September
December to February is the busiest time for motorhome hire companies. You may be able to save a considerable amount if you choose to travel during the low season, which is any time from May to September.
Your Motorhome Is Allowed On the Ferry
If you are planning on travelling between the South and North Island, then you will need to book a trip across Cook Strait (your motorhome hire company may have a partnership with a ferry company and may be able to secure less expensive interisland ferry tickets for you). This trip is around three hours in duration. You will be charged per vehicle that is on the ferry as well as an additional fee for each passenger.
